How to Price Discounts Strategically: A Guide for Business Owners

The Psychology of Discounts

Discounts are one of the most powerful tools in a marketer's toolkit — but used incorrectly, they can destroy your profit margins and train customers to only buy during sales.

This guide teaches you how to use discounts strategically: attract customers while protecting your bottom line.

Discount Calculation Formula

Basic Discount Calculation

Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount % / 100)
Final Price = Original Price - Discount Amount
Customer Savings = Discount Amount

Example: T-shirt priced at ₹800, 30% discount

  • Discount Amount = ₹800 × (30/100) = ₹240
  • Final Price = ₹800 - ₹240 = ₹560
  • Customer Saves = ₹240

Why Discounts Work

Loss aversion: People fear missing a deal more than they desire a gain. "Save ₹200 today" works better than "Get ₹200 off anytime."

Anchoring: Showing the original price makes the discounted price seem even better. "Was ₹2,000, now ₹1,400" is more compelling than just showing ₹1,400.

Urgency: Time-limited discounts create FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) that drives faster purchasing decisions.

Types of Discount Strategies

1. Percentage Discount

Best for: Higher-priced items where the absolute saving sounds large.

"₹5,000 watch at 40% off = Save ₹2,000" — sounds great!

2. Fixed Amount Discount

Best for: Lower-priced items where percentage doesn't sound impressive.

"₹100 off on orders above ₹500" — clear and simple.

3. Buy X Get Y Free

Best for: Increasing average order value and moving excess inventory.

"Buy 2 get 1 free" — perceived as generous, actually 33% discount.

4. Bundle Discount

Best for: Increasing basket size.

"Combo pack of 3 for ₹699" (individual items cost ₹300 each = ₹900)

5. Loyalty Discount

Best for: Rewarding repeat customers.

"10% off for members" — encourages sign-ups and repeat visits.

6. Volume Discount

Best for: B2B sales and wholesale.

"Order 10+ pieces: 15% off, Order 25+: 25% off"

How to Give Discounts Without Hurting Profit

Calculate Your Break-Even Discount

Before offering any discount, calculate the break-even point.

Formula:

Break-even discount % = (Profit Margin %) / (100% + Profit Margin %) × 100

Example:

  • Selling price: ₹1,000
  • Cost price: ₹600
  • Profit margin: 40%
  • Break-even discount: 40 / (100 + 40) × 100 = 28.6%

This means you can offer up to 28.6% discount and still break even. Anything above that is a loss.

Use our Profit Margin Calculator to find your exact margin.

Rules for Profitable Discounting

  1. Know your margin before discounting: Use our Profit Margin Calculator first
  2. Set a minimum order value: "10% off on orders above ₹1,000"
  3. Time-limit your discounts: "Only today" or "Only 50 pieces"
  4. Increase volume to compensate: Lower margin × more units = same profit
  5. Discount strategically, not constantly: Constant discounts train customers to wait for sales

Psychological Pricing Tips

Charm Pricing

₹499 feels significantly cheaper than ₹500 despite being only ₹1 less.

Price Anchoring

Show a higher original price: "Was ₹1,999, Now ₹999" — the ₹999 seems much lower because of the anchor.

Bundle Pricing

"3 items for ₹999" feels like a deal even if individual items would total ₹1,050.

Decoy Pricing

Offer 3 options where the middle option is your target:

  • Basic: ₹299
  • Standard: ₹499 ← (your target)
  • Premium: ₹799

Most customers choose the middle option.

Measuring Discount Campaign Success

Track these metrics:

  • Revenue during discount period vs. normal period
  • Units sold (not just revenue)
  • Profit per unit (not just revenue per unit)
  • New vs. returning customers
  • Average order value

The goal is profitable growth — not just increased revenue. Use our ROI Calculator to measure if your discount campaign was profitable.
