What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a comprehensive indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. Implemented on July 1, 2017, GST replaced multiple indirect taxes including VAT, service tax, and excise duty.
GST is a unified tax system based on the principle of "one nation, one tax."
GST Rate Slabs in India
India has five GST rate slabs:
| Rate | Category | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 0% | Essential goods | Fresh vegetables, milk, eggs, books |
| 5% | Basic necessities | Packed food, medicines, transport |
| 12% | Standard goods | Business class travel, butter, cheese |
| 18% | Most services | Restaurants, IT services, telecom |
| 28% | Luxury items | Cars, tobacco, cement, AC |
Types of GST
CGST (Central GST)
Collected by the Central Government on intra-state transactions (within the same state).
SGST (State GST)
Collected by State Governments on intra-state transactions.
IGST (Integrated GST)
Collected by the Central Government on inter-state transactions (between different states).
Rule: For intra-state supply, CGST + SGST = Total GST rate
Rule: For inter-state supply, IGST = Total GST rate
GST Calculation Formulas
GST Exclusive (Adding GST to base price)
GST Amount = (Base Price Ć GST Rate) / 100
Final Price = Base Price + GST Amount
Example: Product price ā¹1,000, GST 18%
- GST Amount = (1000 Ć 18) / 100 = ā¹180
- Final Price = 1000 + 180 = ā¹1,180
GST Inclusive (Extracting GST from total price)
GST Amount = Total Price - (Total Price Ć 100 / (100 + GST Rate))
Base Price = Total Price - GST Amount
Example: Product price including GST = ā¹1,180, GST rate 18%
- Base Price = 1180 Ć 100 / (100 + 18) = 1180 Ć 100/118 = ā¹1,000
- GST Amount = 1180 - 1000 = ā¹180
